Description
(1898-1978) Rhodesian Fighter Pilot of World War I. On 20th April 1918, Lewis was shot down to become the final and 80th'kill' claimed by Manfred von Richthofen ('The Red Baron') as the pair dueled over German lines. Lewis was captured moments after von Richthofen flew past him, waving. A.L.S.,"D. G. Lewis"Â, 1p. 8vo, Southern Rhodesia, 10th February 1928, to Mr. Reed. Lewis thanks his correspondent for their letter and states that he is"endeavouring to collect aerial photographs from all over the world"Â and asks for a half dozen from their area. He also asks,"Is there any chance of the'Red Knight of Germany' being printed in book form...I should like to procure a copy..."Â. In a postscript, Lewis writes"Could you possibly let me have a photograph of the autographs when you have them all..."Â Annotated in ink in another hand to the upper left corner. Some very slight traces of former mounting to the verso and a couple of very light creases, otherwise very good to fine.
