The expanded second edition, one year after the first, of the first book length description of the natural attractions of California, and the first work to describe the big trees and the Yosemite region in detail. Hutchings was editor and publisher of Hutchings' California Magazine, founded in 1856, and the text (with some revisions) and the illustrations are drawn from the first five volumes of that periodical.
