267 pp. With 105 wood-engraved illustrations. 9¼x5¾", original full red morocco elaborately tooled in gilt, spine titled in gilt, all edges gilt. Second Edition, First Printing.



The expanded second edition, one year after the first, of the first book length description of the natural attractions of California, and the first work to describe the big trees and the Yosemite region in detail. Hutchings was editor and publisher of Hutchings' California Magazine, founded in 1856, and the text (with some revisions) and the illustrations are drawn from the first five volumes of that periodical.

Spine missing 2cm strip at top, spine severely rubbed and chipped, some rubbing to edges and corners; some browning to edges, toning and foxing to pages, some dampstaining to rear endpaper, rear hinge cracked; overall good.
