Japanese Early 20th C Bronze Censer Birds Flying

Lot 0020 Details

Description
Well cast bronze with a classic round shape. I love the crab emerging from the waves with birds flying overhead. They all watch the large waves getting ready to crash.

A wide mouthed heavy bronze that rounds to a slightly raised foot. The mouth is interesting as the lip rounds down and in. The brass has a warm brownish patina with darker patina around the waves and birds. Someone has used the censer to hold a candle and there is still some wax in the bottom. The brass feels soft and smooth.

There are no marks or labels.

MEASUREMENTS
4 ¾” (12.1 cm) diameter x 2 ¾” (7.0 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 1.5 oz (495 g)

CONDITION
There are no cracks, chips, or breaks. The patina has some dark spots.

A traditional, classic censer to rest on a scholar’s desk with incense burning (or like someone else has used it in the past – to hold a candle.
