Pair Antique Japanese Kimono Boxes, carved with scenic top panels, lacquered, 13.4 x 14.3 x 14.3 inches, underside foot of one stamped 1 under lacquer, underside foot of second stamped 2 under lacquer. With a vintage newspaper article showing the pair iIllustrated in the Hong Kong Standard, July 3, 1970 in a Hong Kong residence identified as over 200 years old at the time displayed fitted with Mid-Century slip-on unaffixed glass, wood and brass footed table surrounds that are available at no additional cost to the winning bidder from the family for an approximate USD$ 350 domestic shipping charge if desired. Provenance: Sold on behalf of a Palm Beach County, Florida trust.
Top and side carvings in generally very good condition with a few losses, interior and underside lacquer has some splits and cracks. Note that top and sides appear antique in the Edo or Meiji manner. We surmise the late 19C century onward 1 and 2 stamps to the bottom of the feet could have been applied after manufature if the lacquer was also later than the carving or perhaps the boxes are Meiji and Western 1 and 2 stamps were already in use for export wares as they were on Victorian furniture. We believe the side carved loops on the boxes are for ribbon ties, the ribbon now absent. Note that as with most Asian antiques of dynasty origin, they are sold as antique, i.e. circa 100 years old or possibly older or much older.
