He studied painting in nearby Folkstone. He emigrated to America, where traveled as a hobo, hopping freight cars and selling paintings. He moved around to different parts of the country, from Illinois to Ohio to Texas to California. His work became well recognized. The American Express Company commissioned him to paint a series of six paintings that would be produced as prints for their cardholders, all portraying National Parks.
