Civil War Discharge 144th NY- Signed by 52nd PA War

Lot 0002 Details

Civil War discharge of Private George W. Loveless (sometimes Lovelace) of the 144th New York Infantry. Private Loveless was mustered out at Hilton Head, South Carolina on June 25th, 1865.

Discharge was authorized and signed by Captain George R. Lennard of the 52nd Pennsylvania while he was serving as assistant commissary of musters. According to the 52nd PA’s regimental history, “during the fiercely contested battle of Fair Oaks…while nearly outflanked and almost surrounded by a superior force of the enemy, Lennard was shot in the left breast and at almost the same instant received a serious gunshot wound in the left thigh. He was carried from the battlefield and sent to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Philadelphia.”

Small paper loss around the edges of the documents and normal soiling. Creases where it was folded.
