Description
This well-articulated late Neolithic jade anthropomorphic sculpture from China, is possibly from the Hongshan, a neolithic culture in northwest China (3500 to 2000 BC. The sculpture features a kneeling female figure with ox-like head with Zhulong and elongated ears, hands on thighs, and with typically exaggerated breasts. In early Chinese art, anthropomorphic and animal motifs are generally either naturalistic or highly stylized â€â€œ but in both cases, the artist always appears to have developed a close intimacy with the animals. Although we do not know the exact meaning of animal motifs, the context of similar finds suggests that these creatures were part of the religious or shamanic system. Zhulong, or Pig dragons, are zoomorphic forms with a pig-like head and elongated limbless body coiled around to the head and described as â€Å“suggestively fetal.” Early pig dragons are thick and stubby, and later examples have more graceful, snakelike bodies. Along with the same culture's jade eagles or spirit birds, they are often featured as grave goods. Pig bones have been found interred alongside humans at Hongshan burial sites, suggesting that the animal had some ritual significance. This large sculpture is 9-3/4 inches tall, 3-1/2 inches wide, and 2-7/8 inches deep. The jade exhibits surface alteration, edge wear, and stable fissures, with waxy luster from professional restoration. From a private collection, this artifact is clean, however will be sold without further restoration (as is).
