Lot 0227 Details

Description
900-1000 AD, Byzantine. This icon, in the form of a wearable amulet, shows a larger figure (St Michael) striking a smaller individual (a demon). St Michael was a major saint in the newly Christian lands of Kievan Rus, as well as in the established states of the Eastern Roman Empire (the Byzantine Empire) and in Western Europe during the Middle Ages. Michael is one of the three principal angels mentioned in the Bible, along with Gabriel and Raphael, and is the only one referred to as an 'Archangel' (from the Greek for "leading-" or "princely-" angel). He features prominently in the Book of Revelation, where he is depicted fighting (and defeating) Satan. As a consequence, St Michael is associated primarily with battle and perseverance of good against evil. This amulet may well therefore have belonged to an ordinary person, whether a civilian or a soldier, trying to confront the difficulties of everyday life in turbulent Middle Ages. Good, wearable condition. Size: H:30mm; 6g. Provenance: Property of a London gallery, previously in old British collection formed in the 1970s.
