Lot 0005A Details

Description
This fine and exciting Staffordshire quill holder has elements of the Victorian movement toward nature. A large, well-modeled bird is doing its best to guard its nest atop a tree stump. Lying down beneath the stump and oblivious to the drama above it, is a calf. Entwined around a nearby tree is a green and black snake with its red mouth open, perhaps hissing at the bird.; This is a fairly large quill holder that shows several animals while telling a story. It is exceptionally well molded and finely painted. The bird is unusually painted, with its yellow beak and its feathers expertly picked out in gray. The green snake has black rings to make it appear more realistic and more menacing. Here and there are small bits of bocage to resemble flora.; This piece is in excellent condition for its age and type. A wide gold line wraps around the front of the base, but parts of this line have rubbed off. There is also a gold line around the hole of the quill holder, but some of this has rubbed off as well. There is a firing fault and a glaze fault on the very bottom edge of the base near the left side; however, this is not especially noticeable.; It measures 4 inches high and 3-1/2 inches wide at the base.; This is an exceptionally rare quill holder with beautiful painting details as well as fine modeling. It would be a superb addition to any collection.
