Description
SERIAL 209832. BARREL 5". CALIBER .45 ACP. This rare gun falls into the very early 1917 serial number USMC shipped range (209587-210386) There were four shipments of 1911's to the Corp in 1917 for a total of 2400 guns. This was part of the 2nd shipment. The last shipment was 400 guns sent in 1918. Only 2800 guns total were shipped to the Marines during our involvement in the war. Number 209787-209986 are listed in the Goddard book on page 239 being shipped to USMC PHILADELPHIA on July 5th, 1917. One of the hardest to find of any US Property Colt 1911's are those that were shipped to the Corp and this one was shipped just as America entered the First World War. it has all correct parts to include long smooth trigger, checkered wide spur hammer, checkered slide stop & safety, diamond checkered walnut grips, flat main spring housing with lanyard loop, two tone tempered magazine with lanyard loop and beveled rear sight with U notch. Right side of slide is stamped MODEL OF 1911 US ARMY. (All Marine shipped guns were Army stamped) Left side of frame is stamped UNITED STATES PROPERTY. Left side of frame has inspector stamp GHS in circle for Gilbert Stewart 1915-1918. Overall the gun has seen use and retains about 60% blue with a mint bore. Grips are very good and also show typical wear. Pistol comes with US 1912 style holster with the Marine Corp emblem on flap that has been there forever and has green verdigris inside with a name scratched inside. (Tom Hurst 629066 USMC) A far above average given the hard use most of these Marine Corps guns saw in the trenches of France. In the spring of 1918 when the battle at Belleau Wood was over, the result was nearly 10,000 American casualties, including more than 1,800 killed, and an unknown number of Germans. The U.S. Marine Corps suffered more casualties in that battle than it did in its entire history to that point and are credited with saving Paris. Also included is the book "With the Help of God and a Few Marines" by Brigadier General A.W. Catline written in 1919. C&R
