Description
Civil War era [ca. 1860] half-length, vintage oval albumen photo of Sylvanus Wilcox laid to heavy mount, trimmed at corners into attractive oval shape, 6¾"x8½". Boldly annotated on verso in period hand: "Sylvanus Wilcox. Captain in War of the Rebellion or the Civil War - 1861-1865. Lived at Gasport, Niagara Co., New York when he enlisted. Was presented with a sword by the people of Gasport, then a very small village." General wear; light mottling on photo; toned at edges from previous framing; scattered foxing on verso; else VG. Wilcox was a lieutenant in New York's 151st Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The Regiment was organized at Lockport, New York and fought for three years (1862-65) under the command of Colonel William Emerson.
