Lot 0346 Details

Description
(1862-1948). Esteemed chief justice of US Supreme Court (1930-41); Republican presidential candidate defeated by Woodwork Wilson (1916); US secretary of state (1921-25) under Harding and Coolidge; a leader of the progressive movement in the early 1900s. TLS, 3pp w/ integral leaf, 6¾"x9¾", Albany, Dec 17, 1907. On State of New York Executive Chamber letterhead with gilt seal marked "Personal." To Senator Redfield Proctor a few months before Proctor's death in which he explains in some detail his interest and reasoning in the 1908 political process. Excellent political content. In very small part: "...I think you understand my position. You of course are familiar, at least in a general way, with the conditions under which I took office. It was important from the standpoint of the general welfare, and it was essential to the interests of the Republican party in the State, that I should redeem so far as possible the promises made in the campaign, and it was my ambition that the administration should win, and should deserve to win, the confidence of the people...To have a reasonable measure of success it was absolutely necessary that I should not become involved in factional controversies and that I should not be under just suspicion of endeavoring to build up a machine in my own interest...I made a speech before the Republican Club of New York stating distinctly that I did not seek any office and that I should not attempt to influence the selection of delegates...Whether they favor my nomination or that of some one else, will, and properly should, depend upon their views of the requirements of the situation..." Boldly penned in black ink; Minor folds from mailing; light toning; occasional light folds; Fine example. An interesting personal view by Hughes. In 1908, Hughes was offered the vice-presidential nomination by William Howard Taft, but he declined it to run again for Governor.
