A Very rare Old carved Ironwood Guardian sculpture with heavily weathered surface, suggesting generations of exposure and field use and as such suggests the sculpture likely dates to the early half of the 20th century when considering the amount of deterioration of this very hard, heavy and insect resistant ironwood. The figures arms and hands carved in shallow relief are clearly seen on the figure’s torso. Hampatong would be found in the field and within the village. Placed among rice crops, such idols are thought to enhance fertility and ensure a bountiful harvest. Others were carved specifically for protection and placed throughout villages and along well-traveled paths.Dayak peoples, Borneo, Kalimantan / Indonesia. The sculpture measures 45 inches tall and has been custom mounted.
