Lot 1643 Details

Description
Inscribed to Archie Wilson from Mr Solomon, Dec. 25, 1875. Bright blue cloth covers, very little edge wear, bright gilt. Illustrated throughout by Clemens himself. Includes [x=#8220/]My First Literary Venture[x=#8221/] and other great short stories. Clemens[x=#8217/] stories are fanciful and fun, even in todays politically correct world. But it can[x=#8217/]t be missed [x=#8211/] the illustrations [x=#8211/] mostly all by Clemens all through the book- these are fantastic. The essay on the [x=#8220/]Blind letter department[x=#8221/] is hysterical. My own handwriting is bad enough for my coworkers to decipher, but here Clemens is at his best- both in prose, humor and illustrations. Another great one is the story of his [x=#8220/]first interview with Artemus Ward[x=#8221/]. Ward was a comedic icon to Clemens, and the two met in Virginia City in the early 1860s, where their shenanigans were well recorded. This story reflects the first meeting there, and what Ward did to Clemens [x=#8220/]under the influence[x=#8221/], a marvelous technical presentation of ore deposit geology designed to twist anyone into a donut twist. This is a rare instance where Clemens lets the reader into his world, in this case as he was developing his sense of humor early on- being [x=#8220/]taught[x=#8221/] by one of the best, Ward. rare.
