4 ¼ inches. Unstamped. Note: Harriett Bull’s collection of early Marblehead Pottery comes from family members directly connected to the Devereux House Sanitarium in Marblehead where Marblehead Pottery had its beginnings. Henry F. Pitman (1808-1885), father of Harriett’s paternal grandmother Carrie Pitman Brown (1849- 1941) was a Trustee of the Devereux House. Carrie Pitman Brown’s niece, Eliza Pitman Goldthwaite was married to Dr. Herbert Hall, the head of the Sanitarium. Dr. Hall prescribed various handicraft activities as a way to treat his “emotionally disturbed ”patients. The Marblehead Pottery business began at Devereux House. Harriett’s aunt, occupational therapist Beth Brown, worked at the Sanitarium teaching weaving, jewelry making and creating decorative cement tiles.
