Description
Late 17th to early 18th c. Hardwood carvings of Angels, Northern Italy or Southern France, standing in opposing stances, holding large cornucopia form candle prickets in one hand (with fluted tin wax catchers), their other arms raised in gesture with empty hand, roughly 31" x 12" x 10". Weathered, remnants of gesso and polychrome, wormage, shrinkage cracks, one arm replaced, great patina. Wing mounting points on back, but wings themselves missing. Provenance: From the Estate of Rosemarie Wolfe, Cape Elizabeth, ME
