Die alte Stadt Djenné wurde um 800 n. Chr. gegründet und gehörte zum Reich Ghana. Sie war die wesentlichste Handelsstation für Karawanen, die die Sahara durchquerten, und damit auch Bindeglied zwischen Schwarzafrika und Mittelmeer.

In der Region dieser Stadt wurden seit 1943 durch Flusslaufänderungen Terrakotten und Objekte aus Metall gefunden. Obwohl diese Region schon damals islamisiert war, entwickelte sich dort offensichtlich parallel eine figürliche Kunst.

Obwohl Gussarbeiten der Djenné nicht gänzlich unbekannt sind, lassen sich, gestützt auf den heutigen Forschungsstand, über den Verwendungszweck dieser selten Darstellung keine gesicherten Angaben machen. Naturwissenschaftliche Analysen datieren die Funde zwischen Anfang des 11. Jh. und Ende des 17. Jh.
