Spindle hole and cut cancel both missing signature else near fine. John Vanderlyn (1776 - 1852) was a young artist who was encouraged by Burr to come to New York to study. For three years he was employed by Thomas Barrow one of the earliest art dealers in the city so one could easily speculate that this check was either to help support Venderlyn of was used to purchase art.
