Egyptian Wood & Painted Gesso Coffin Fragment w/ Anubis

Lot 0003F Details

Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A coffin fragment carved from cedar and covered with polychrome decorations atop a white gesso ground. A pair of red-painted hieroglyphic columns enclose a third, central column of black text, and the columnar script is flanked with a pair of Anubis jackals laying recumbent atop flared plinths. Each jet-black jackal raises its head and ears towards the center, and the leftmost plinth has a more complete presentation that features vertical red, blue, and black stripes above a register of stippling. Six dowel holes surround the artifact with some containing remains of the original dowels. The width and gently sloped lateral edges of this fragment suggests it is from a smaller coffin, perhaps from a young woman or a child. Size: 11.8" W x 3.875" H (30 cm x 9.8 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, 1980s-2000s
