Description
Antique 1735 Copper Engraving

Portrait of Dr. Johann August Oehme (1672/3-1754); copper engraving, by Johann Christoph Sysang, signed in plate "Sysang sc." inscription "D. Joh. August Oehme, P.T. Medic: et Chirurg: Practicus Drestenis. Symb. Per angusta ad augusta." Reference: This portrait was created in 1735 as a frontispiece for Oehme's medical book.

As a physician in the royal service, Johann August Oehme served as surgeon in battles and sieges during the war. Later he worked as physician and surgeon in Dresden. In 1735, he published a medical textbook, which became very popular during the 18th century. His son, John August bequeathed his father's recipes and other papers to Friedrichstadt charity school.

Johann Christoph Sysang [May 20, 1703, Leipzig - July 12, 1757, Leipzig, Saxony Germany], was trained in the workshop of Martin Bernigeroth (1670-1733, Leipzig). He was active in Halle, Dresden, Prague and Leipzig.

Several engravings by Sysang are present in the museum collections [British Museum lists 55 of his works in its collection]

Provenance:
This plate comes from a collection of engravings bound by the German art collector "A.L." The finalized collection of hand-numbered engravings is dated 1762 which provides additional warranty that the engravings are authentic and created prior to 1762; auctioned in London, UK.

Certification of Authenticity will be included upon buyers request.
