Lot 1077 Details

Description
Lot consists of 3 items: A) framed colored illustration of the attack upon the 6th Massachusetts as it passed through Baltimore on the way to Washington in 1861. A soldier defends the U.S. flag as a mob of ruffians attacks the troops. This is framed with 2 patriotic envelopes. 1 is titled, "Cain of Baltimore," and shows Baltimore Marshal of Police George Proctor Kane with 2 funeral pyres labeled "Union" has a tall pillar of smoke, but that labeled "Secession" has begun smoking as well. The second envelope is illustrated by hand with a first national Confederate flag titled "Slavery!!! is our motto". CONDITION: Excellent. B) Pro-southern satirical wood cut showing union troops at Fist Bull Run fleeing to Washington. Figures are numbered with a key provided at bottom. Southern troops are at upper left with version of the CS national flag. Across the image the 12th NY and Zouaves are identified as well as Senator Wilson, who passes up the chance to help a wounded soldier, members of congress in a carriage led by a US dragoon blowing a trumpet, from which sounds "Home Sweet Home," the "Hon. Lovejoy & Co. making for the woods," with a "fat left-tenant" heading for Washington at right and "Gen. McDowell" in a 2-wheel cart whipping a horse to get away as well. CONDITION: Very good, in gilt wood frame ready to display. C) Photograph of "Old Abe, The War Eagle" in a Civil War period leatherette photo case embossed with an American eagle and shield. A postwar image of the famous eagle mascot of the 8th Wisconsin. Carried by their colorguard on his own perch, the eagle purportedly flew about the battle line and screeched while under fire. The eagle survived his army service and was a popular attraction and fund-raiser for veterans. CONDITION: Very Good, leather shows scratches and wear from handling. SR Condition: Dimensions: 24 - 1/4" x 16 - 1/2".
