Lot 2277 Details

Description
Produced in 1836/38 and at the same time as the fall of the Alamo and the famous Jim Bowie. Graveley & Wreaks New York, Bowie/Hunting knife with 10-1/8" blade with 2 inch width and a thickness of .24 inches. Silver mounted double guard with scroll finials and an elegant Eagles head butt. Grip is of dark ebony with finely checkered spine and base and silver name plate and shield on sides. Dual hollow ground blade with 4-1/4" false edge. Marketed by John Graveley and Charles Wreaks in the more affluent neighborhood of New York City with their clients being the highest of society. The collaboration and sales of these important Bowie's knives lasted for only 2 years and was abruptly ended by the banking failures of the period as well as the legislation against knives of this nature being marketed and sold in areas of Tennessee which at the time was the launching point for travel westward. Only Three examples are known and this being the most ornate and one of only two Silver mounted examples. Housed in its original silver mounted scabbard. CONDITION: Superb in every regard with crisp and legible markings on the blade. The blade has been lightly cleaned at a much earlier period with traces of earlier staining evident. The silver guard and eagle butt are excellent with a wonderful light tarnish and small period handling marks. The ebony grip is excellent with no cracking, distress or material loss. The silver mounted scabbard is equally fine with all stitching being solid and silver rigidly retained. The leather is slightly alligatored on the exterior with strong amounts of the dark brown exterior finish remaining. Truly one of the finest American Bowie's to be offered to the collectors market in recent history. TDW Accessories: Sheath Blade Length: 10-1/8" Overall Length: 16 - 1/4" Paperwork: Binder of photos Condition: Dimensions: Length: 16 - 1/4".
