Description
Group of shots (3) depicting Naval Academy Midshipmen taken during the Civil War. The CDV of the two young men with their smoking jackets and caps is a wonderfully candid view for the time. While one subject's identity is unknown, the other is identified in period ink as Phillip H. Cooper (1844-1912). "Fowler" of Newport, RI imprint on the verso of one view, several ink inscriptions on the reverse of the other two. Phillip H. Cooper (1844-1912) was made a Professor of mathematics while still a Midshipman at the Naval Academy, he was graduated early and assigned to several vessels before the end of the Civil War and saw action at the Battle of Mobile Bay. After the war, he led a long and distinguished career in the Navy, eventually becoming an Admiral.
