Description
Oliver Ellsworth (1745-1807) Founding Father. Ellsworth was chosen as one of Connecticut's representatives in the Continental Congress in 1777. He was also active in his state's efforts during the Revolution. He served as one of Connecticut's first two senators in the new federal government between 1789 and 1796. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in the spring of 1796 and served as commissioner to France in 1799 and 1800. 8” x 5” document signed, Hartford, January 4, 1776. The document is a pay order directing payment to Capt. Waterman Cleft “…it being for the Service…of persons employed in…Guns for his Company….” Also signed by fellow pay committee members Thomas Seymour and Ezekiel Williams (1729-1818) and State Treasurer John Lawrence (1719-1802). Endorsed on the reverse by Waterman Cleft.
