Description
Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) Composer, conductor. Bernstein’s fame derived from his long tenure as the music director of the New York Philharmonic, from his conducting of concerts with most of the world’s leading orchestras, and from his music for West Side Story, as well as Candide, Wonderful Town, On the Town and his own Mass. 3 ¼” x 5 ½”government postcard, cancelled at Lenox, Massachusetts on July 8, 1940 with an autograph note signed, “Best Lenny”. The postcard is addressed to “Miquelle” , apparently in Renee Monquelle’s hand, requesting Bernstein comments on the message side, “Yes…No…for additional information, if any, please use space below”. Bernstein has Xed both Yes and No and adds: “AND HOW.” “R. Thompson’s 2nd Symph! Letter follows (if I ever get a second)” and in French “Quel Paysage!” (What landscape) Quel Kouss! ”The Berkshire Music Center, Tanglewood, opened formally on July 8, 1940, with music, including the first performance of Randall Thompson's Alleluia for unaccompanied chorus, sung every summer at the TMC's Opening Exercises. Renee Longy Miquelle (1897-1979). was a pianist and music theoretician whose teaching career spanned 65 years, she was a member of the Literature and Materials Faculty of the Juilliard School of Music .and had been Bernstein’s teacher.
