CIVIL WAR ERA CDV UNION GENERALS NAVY ADMIRAL PORTRAITS

Lot of five Civil War era carte de visite images, etching portraits of US generals and one Navy admiral. Includes:

  • David Porter (1813-1891), commanded ship Powhaten to relieve Ft. Pickens, FL 1861. Commanded mortar flotilla to capture New Orleans 1862. Commanded Mississippi squadron of Vicksburg, promoted to Read Admiral 1863. Commanded the North Atlantic Blocking Squadron 1864. Superintendent of Naval Academy. Promoted Admiral in 1870. 
  • Benjamin Butler (181-1893), Union major general of volunteers in 861, military govenor of Louisiana 1862. COmmanded army of the James in 1863, resigned in 1865. Govenor of Massachusetts 1882, died in 1893. 
  • Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888), Union general. Fought against Native Americans along the Rio Grande and the Northwest, commanded cavalry in Army of Potomac, commander of Texas and Louisiana during reconstruction. Commander in chief of army 1884. 
  • George Meade (1815-1872), Union general, fought in Seminole Indian War, fought in Mexican-American war, wounded at White Oak Stump, Virginia 1861. Commander of army of Potomac 1863, died of war wounds complicated by pneumonia.
  • William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891), Union general
  • Joseph Hooker (1814-1879), Union general, fought in Seminole War and Mexican-American war. Commanded Army of the Potomac 1863, Corps commander in Army of the Tennessee 1863. Photo by Taber & Co. New Bedford, Mass.
