Description
The Doors, Jef Airplane, Byrds 1967 S.F. Magic Mountain Music Fest Pamphlet / Flyer. An original purple & orange advertising flyer / pamphlet / program for the event that Rolling Stone magazine called "America's first-ever rock festival"... the KFRC Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival in Mount Tamalpais, CA. The two-day event took place on June 10 & 11, 1967, just one week before Monterey Pop 135 miles to the south. Among the talent performing this weekend were The Doors, with "Light My Fire" just entering the charts, and the Jefferson Airplane, with "Somebody to Love" the #6 record in the nation right now. Plenty of other great performers were on hand as well: The Byrds, Moby Grape, a nice soul element with Wilson Pickett and Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Steve Miller Blues Band, Country Joe & the Fish, the 13th Floor Elevators, The Grass Roots, The Seeds, Tim Buckley and too many others to list. You can see the full list clearly in our pictures. You see the smaller conventional handbill for this event for sale a lot, but not often this attractive piece. Its flower motif is very much of the times, as is the purple and orange coloring. Lots of details are supplied, and you gotta love the map on the back with a list of exhibitors that included Mouse Studios (!) and the Berkeley Bonaparte (!!), the Bay-Area poster art company founded that year by Rick Griffin, Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoso, Stanley Mouse and Wes Wilson. Wow, we wonder who manned the booths? Also listed are charming businesses like Good Karma Health Food and all assorted nascent hippie enterprises. Rolling Stone ran a great, long article on this Fest in 2014 which is available on the internet. It's a gas to see acts like the Doors and Jefferson Airplane playing outdoors in bright, midday sunlight. Measures 8 ½" x 11" closed and 17" x 11" opened up. Grades to Very Good Minus condition for copious creasing throughout, having once been folded down into eighths, but very little color broken except for two places on the flower-cover. Some dirt marks on the cover under the flower. Just generally a ton of handling, which often happened to small festival pieces like this back in the day. COA from Heritage Auctions.
