Lot 0090 Details

Description
Lengola people are living on the left bank of the Zaire river. The Butoka society regulates their social, political and economic activiteis. Lengola maskas are rare and are stylistically informed by those of the Lega tribe [The Tribal Arts of Africa, Jean-Baptiste Bacquart, P.144].
The concave heart-shaped face with protuberant eyes is clear evidence of Lega stylistic influence, but the coloring – half white, half red – is atypical of the Lega and quite common among the Lengola. The elongation of the head appears on Lengola masks and figures in a range of sizes and functional contexts.
Provenance: former private collection from Belgium.
