Lot 2123 Details

Description
"Barton, 1985", monumental oil on linen, initialed "IGN" lower left, depicting a blonde woman dressed in black, a young child seated at her feet, three pieces of art on the salmon colored wall behind, housed in a mahogany slat frame with gold front edge, black liner, OS: 89 1/4" x 63 1/4", SS: 88" x 62". Fine condition.Mary Lou Barton was the artist's sons' nanny. His middle son Emmanuel is the young child. Provenance: From the Estate of Rosemarie Wolfe, Cape Elizabeth ME and Palm Beach FL.
"Barton was my sons' babysitter. She really dressed like this. Like Mary Poppins! She’d dress up on Saturdays and took the bus from Lower Merion to Center City to shop at the big draftsmen this stores Strawbridge & Clothier, Lits, Gimbels and John Wanamaker. I’d see her in town sometimes near my studio on Chestnut Street. I asked her to pose. She raised all three of my sons while they were in preschool. She was part of a large Catholic family. She had ten kids of her own. As each one would become school age, she brought in a “new” child from the outside so that she still had ten at home every day. All the outside kids had to be gone before her husband came home from work. He didn’t want her babysitting. But she used some of the babysitting money for her Saturday shopping trips into the City." - Bo Bartlett
