Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco, ca. 200 BCE to 300 CE. Impressive for its size and well as its form, a kneeling female figure with her hands placed upon her protruding, perhaps pregnant, belly, nude with delineated breasts, navel, and genitalia. She faces forward with a white face, almond-shaped eyes, an arched browline, a triangular nose adorned with a nose ring, an open mouth as if speaking or chanting, multiple rings decorating her ears, a cap-like headdress, as well as extensive manganese and nice burnishing marks. A wonderful example of Chinesco ware, considered by many to be the most desirable of all Nayarit pottery genres. Size: 7" W x 18.25" H (17.8 cm x 46.4 cm)

Provenance: ex Clars Auction Gallery; ex prominent Woodside, California, USA collection; ex Ron Messick Fine Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, acquired before 2003
