Description
Sam Barber (European-born American, active mid to late 20th century). Oil on canvas board, ca. 1960s to 1970s. Signed "S. Barber" on lower right. A tranquil Cape Cod, Massachusetts scene, depicting a marina with boats idling at the dock and two boatmen heading in towards the dock occupying the foreground, painted by Sam Barber who studied with William Draper at the Art Students League in New York, Giantano Cessore the National Academy of Design, and Henry Hensche in Cape Cod. Barber studied with Hensche the longest - for six years, and the influence of Hensche's American Impressionism and muted color palette is quite evident in this composition. Hensche avidly studied Monet and aimed to abide by his keen perception of color or "full color seeing" as he called it, which he taught his students, among them William Draper, Franz Kline, and Sam Barber. Size (canvas board): 29.625" W x 23.6" H (75.2 cm x 59.9 cm); (frame): 37.625" W x 31.75" H (95.6 cm x 80.6 cm)

Sam Barber studied at the Art Student League in New York City under William Draper from 1966 to 1969; the National Academy of Design in New York City under Giantano Cessore from 1972 to 1974, and the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, Massachusetts under Henry Hensche from 1966 to 1972. He has received many awards and accolades for his art including Cape Cod Association, First Prize in Oil - 1974, 1977, 1980, 1981, 1983; Cape Cod Association, Excellence in Tradition - 1974; Cape Cod Association, Best in Show - 1975, 1976; Cape Cod Association, Best in Pastel - 1977; Cape Cod Association, Best in Oil, All New England - 1978; and Salmagundi Club (New York City) Philip Eisenberg Award - 1981.

Biographical Statement from Sam Barber website: "Sam Barber sees the world differently than you or I. Step into his home or studio and the dancing lights and the wondrous symphony of colors transport you to another time and place.

Sam was born in Europe and came to the United States when he was four years old. He first became aware of art as a way of expressing what he saw and felt when he was about five years old. Sam went on to art school and people began to notice the unique qualities of his work. He was something special. Even before he began to study art formally, Sam realized that this was all he wanted to do with his life.

At age twenty-two, Sam won a scholarship to the highly regarded Art Students League in New York. He then went on to study at the National Academy of Design. His teacher, William Draper, recognized his talent and in the mid-1960s arranged for him to study with Henry Hensche at the distinguished Cape School of Art in Provincetown, MA. Organized by the American Impressionists, the school allowed its students' free rein to experiment. Sam would stay on to study with Henry for the next nine years.

In 1974, Sam began teaching portrait and landscape painting at the Cape Cod Conservatory of Music and Fine Arts and at the Cape Cod Art Association. He participated in many exhibitions, receiving the First Prize in Oil of the Cape Cod Association five times between 1974 and 1983. He is a member of the prestigious Society of American Impressionists.

Sam has made Cape Cod, MA his home for over fifty years and says, "Living here offers tremendous changes of light and this affects my paintings ". "Surrounded by water," he muses, "causes the sky to change from green to green-blue to aqua-light blue sometimes in a matter of minutes.... When I came here to study with Henry Hensche I knew right away that this was the place for me and that I would stay".

He currently lives in Centerville with his supportive wife, Janie. Sam will tell you in no uncertain terms that Janie has been the rock of his life and the inspiration for many of his works. His paintings often feature Janie as the classic beauty set among a profusion of flowers or highlighting a seascape.

To celebrate his fiftieth year of painting in this beautiful place, The Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis gave him a major exhibition of his work in 2016."

Provenance: The William F. Draper Collection, New York City, USA, acquired via descent from the late William Franklin Draper (1912-2003), an accomplished American artist whose career spanned seven decades. Known as the "Dean of American Portraiture," William Draper was the only artist to paint President John F. Kennedy from life, and his oeuvre includes marvelous landscapes from his world travels, military paintings as he was one of only seventeen Combat Artists in WWII, and portraits of illustrious individuals.
