Inscribed J.P. and dated 1799, watercolor on ivory, gilt locket frame, scratches.
2 3/4 in. x 2 1/8 in.
PROVENANCE:
Descended in Lewis-Lampe family to the present owner. Joseph Saunders Lewis(1778 - 1836) was born in Philadelphia, the son of Mordecai and Hannah Saunders Lewis and married Frances Montgomery in 1800. He served as Director of the Philadelphia contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by fire and President of the Schuylkill Navigation Company. His father was a prominent merchant, ship owner and devote Quaker. By family tradition this miniature was an engagement gift to fiancee Frances Montgomery, to whom he was married in 1800.
