RARE JOHN JAMES AUDUBON HEN & YOUNG FOLIO ENGRAVING

Lot 0113 Details

Description
Great American Hen and Young. Plate 6 No. II from The Birds of America. Circa 1827. Hand Colored Engraving and Etching. Colored by R. Havell and engraved by W. H. Lizars (1788-1859). Sheet measures 25.75 x 38.75 inches. The print has been laid down to cardstock. There is soiling and discoloration. Colors are faded. Some chips to paper's margins with losses. This rare print will need paper conservation and restoration. Note: This is one of Audubon’s great compositions. This example has the addition by Havell of the aquatinting to the copperplate that Lizars engraved. Audubon said of this bird, “... Here you have [the male Turkey’s] mate, now coverted into a kind of anxious parent, leading her young progeny, with measured step and watchful eye, through the intricacies of the forest. The chickens, still covered with down, are running among her feet in pursuit of insects” (Audubon, Ornithological Biography (1831).
