Herbert Ryman Walt Disney Congressional Medal in bronze and original design artwork. 3 in. bronze medal with original desing artwork. Since the American Revolution, the United States Congress has commissioned gold medals as its highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions. Beginning with George Washington, such select list of recipients have included Cornelius Vanderbilt, Charles A. Lindbergh, and Thomas A. Edison. On March 25, 1969, Walt Disney was awarded, posthumously, this honor, in presentation by President Richard M. Nixon. Designed by artist Herbert Ryman, further refined by sculptor Blaine Gibson, a single gold medal was authorized, and a limited minting of bronze replicas allowed; made available to individuals who gave significant support to the California Institute of the Arts, the college Walt Disney was instrumental in forming.
