RARE VIKING PROTECTIVE BROOCH NECKLACE C.900-1050 AD

Lot 0114 Details

Description
Vikings wore small metal brooches of various types on their jerkins to provide a measure of protection against sword cuts as well as for decoration. They were, in fact, were a form of armor. See current Public Television programming for documentation of these in action. As protectors, they also held spiritual significance for the warrior. Most were circular of flat or round section. This is a rare variation of the Omega brooch which is generally of the penannular form with curled terminals. This example, is about 1 5/8” long with spatulate “swallow tail” terminals, each of which has a banded rectangular base. It has been professionally refurbished with the silver overlay restored, and is suspended from a Sterling silver mounted polished leather neck cord for contemporary wear. Gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
