(MGM, 1968) One of the most significant physical props to ever surface on the collector’s marketplace, due to the extreme control director Stanley Kubrick maintained over every aspect of each of his productions. 2001: A Space Odyssey was four years in the making, and the result was extraordinary attention to detail and imagination concerning man’s exploration into space. Only four of these chest-pack control modules appear in the film, and this one from the blue suit is the only verified original currently known to survive. Fiberglass with aluminum, plastic, and glass fixtures, intricately detailed instruction labels, and three-point quick release buckles intact. Orange paint is chipped and bumped at corners most likely from stunt use, but all of the essential details remain virtually as screen-used, including the “USAA DISCOVERY” decal. Originally obtained when a colleague of Robert McCall, conceptual artist for this film, arranged for a number of items to be exhibited at R.I.T. in 1970, and afterward gifted the pack to the current owner as thanks for help with the exhibition.
