Description
Historic leather medicine saddlebag belonging to Dr. Matthew Butler, who served as a Surgeon in the 37th Virginia. Dr. Butler assisted in amputating General "Stonewall" Jackson's arm, the famous event which compelled General Robert E. Lee to remark "he [Jackson] has lost his left arm, but I have lost my right arm."

Extensively documented, the saddlebag descended in the family of Dr. William Butler and was sold in the 1970s by his great-grandson, John Brockman. Mr. Bockman donated and sold various instruments used in General "Stonewall" Jackson's amputation, many of which are still retained by various institutions across the country. Accompanying the saddlebag are copies of letters from the 1970s written by several museums interested in obtaining it and an auction catalog from when the saddlebag was most recently sold. We have also discovered newspaper articles which will given to the successful bidder which discuss Dr. Butler and his effects in relation to the Brockman descendants.

The general condition of the saddlebag is good in consideration of its age, the leather is somewhat stiff but pliable. One of buckles is detached.

"By 1860, Butler, then 22 years old, began his practice in Bristol working with Dr. Colemon. But then came the Civil War. Early in that conflict, Butler enlisted in the 37th Regiment of Virginia Volunteers of the Confederate States of America. He served as a surgeon having learned much of his surgical skills under his friend and mentor, Dr. Colemon. His moment of fame came on May 2, 1863 when he was called upon to assist in the removal of the wounded arm of Gen. Stonewall Jackson. He kept some of the instruments used in this operation for as long as he lived. I have been told that they are now in a North Carolina museum." - Bristol Herald Courier
