Item Details
Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), Chaco style, ca. 975 to 1150 CE. A hand- built pottery pitcher or cup that rests on a rounded base with a slightly piriform body, a tall neck, and an applied handle. The exterior of the vessel is painted with black motifs of rectangular shapes with diagonal stripes on a white ground. Two black parallel lines run down the handle. Pottery played an important role in Anasazi culture and included both utilitarian and decorative pieces that could be traded with neighboring communities for food or other goods. Anasazi pottery was made by hand coiling clay, then smoothing the surface and painting with designs before firing. This petite pitcher is a lovely example created via this technique!
