210: Attractive Samanid bowl from northeastern Iran

Lot 0210
An attractive Samanid bowl from northeastern Iran, 9th - 10 Century AD, with pseudo-Kufic script and a bird-like device amidst floral-derive decoration, all in black over a yellow ground. The outer rim of the bowl is decorated with alternating parallel lines and oval with hatching within, some of the glossy lead glaze remaining. Repaired from several sherds but quite appealing. H: 3 3/4" (9.5 cm), Dia: 9" (22.9 cm). The Samanids were responsible for a Renaissance of Persian art and language, the capital in Bukhara.
