9th C. Viking Iron Spear Tip w/ Bent Tip
Item Details
Description
Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A lengthy iron spear head bearing a tapered socketing shaft with a flared lower periphery, a tapering neck, and a petaloid blade that is bent along the top and tip. The degree of tip curvature indicates the result of attempting to pierce something much harder than itself, though not so hard as to damage the integrity of the point itself. Size: 12.9" L x 0.9" W (32.8 cm x 2.3 cm)

Cf. Arbman, H. Birka I: Die Graber, Uppsala, 1940, table 8.

Provenance: private Fort Collins, Colorado, USA collection; ex-Timeline Auctions (May 31, 2019); ex-private European collection; formerly in an old European collection formed in the 1980s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
