Description
Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A fine pair of forged-iron spear heads from Viking-era Europe. The first spear head is made from carbon steel and features an octagonal socketing shaft surmounted by a petaloid blade bearing sharpened edges and a shallow midrib. The second iron spear head exhibits a cylindrical socketing shaft and an elongated, tapered blade with abrasions that reveal the metal graining within. Both weapons are covered in lustrous patina. Size (cylindrical shaft): 9.4" L x 1.2" W (23.9 cm x 3 cm); (octagonal shaft): 9.3" L x 1.375" W (23.6 cm x 3.5 cm)

Spear head with cylindrical shaft has losses to tip and areas of blade body as shown; spear head with octagonal shaft is intact and very good. Both items have nicks and abrasions to blades and socketing shafts, with light encrustations, and pitting in some areas. Great patina throughout.
