Description
Western Europe, probably Great Britain, France, or Italy, ca. 17th century CE. A fascinating wooden sheath for a knife or dagger that tapers to a metal point, painted a dark shade of bistre and decorated with several registers of openwork lead alloy on all sides that serve to hold the scabbard together. Presenting with a high central ridge that slopes to either side, the front is adorned with four rows of two "x" shapes, separated into groups of two by a register of lead alloy and within those divided by a band embellished with a diamond motif. The sides feature registers of slanted lines, while the flat back has four horizontal rows of "x" motifs. Size: 1.125" W x 6.75" H (2.9 cm x 17.1 cm)
