Description
A GEORGE V MAHOGANY DRESSING TABLE AND STERLING SILVER TOILETTE SERVICE, BY GEORGE BETJEMANN AND SONS, RETAILED BY J.E. CALDWELL AND CO, EARLY 1920s, the rectangular hinged lid centering an inlaid flame mahogany oval panel above a bronze bail handle and circular lock flanked by triple apertures for electric lighting, opening as a triptych folding mirror above a beveled glass door with plaque engraved "RD NO 541493.," protecting a cream color lacquered interior fitted with various compartments inclosing thirty-two pieces of silver gilt sterling and mounted cut crystal lady's toilette items, each hallmarked for George Betjemann & Sons, London, assay mark, date letters for 1922-1924, label "MADE IN ENGLAND / FOR CALDWELL & Co / PHILADELPHIA," flanked by swiveling velvet lined open compartmental drawers over beveled glass shelves above a removable red velvet lined jewelry tray, over a central kneehole within two locking side drawers and raised on tapering square form legs ending in conforming brass caps on casters, verso George Betjemann & Sons pressed brass "GB&S" monogrammed label, includes three keys. Height: 37 1/2" Width: 35" Depth: 22" Provenance: Personal Collection of Kristi Erlenbach, Houston, Texas.
Condition
Exterior has surface buildup, expected scuff marks, and scratches, dings, stress cracks, one leg has been repaired and old copper wire for lighting protrudes from back of lid. Interior cream lacquer is cracking and flaking, velvet linings are faded, worn, and need replacing, mirror has expected spotting from age and environment, some silver-gilt items have light wear, dings and rubbed areas but are generally in good shape, some brushes lack some or most bristles and some of the white metal parts of nail care utensils have oxidized.
