PEDRO FRIEDEBERG (Italian/Mexican b. 1936) A SCULPTURE,

Lot 0512 Details

Description
PEDRO FRIEDEBERG (Italian/Mexican b. 1936) A SCULPTURE, "Model for Hand Chair," gilt gesso and wood, a scaled model of the hand chair on a trumpet form support, signed at base. Height: 12 1/2" Diameter: 7 1/4" Note: The hand chair was designed by surrealist artist Pedro Friedeberg in 1962, when he was just 24 years old. From a very early age, Friedeberg rallied against structure and convention, finding inspiration in the Dadaist principle of creating anti-art for art's sake. Although he has painted, illustrated, and sculpted countless pieces throughout his ongoing career, he is best known for the hand chair, selling over 5,000 units since its creation. In the mid 20th century, the modernists, designers, and schools of architecture such as Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, and the Bauhaus reigned supreme. Friedeberg's chair is designed as a parody of their principle that, "form follows function." Provenance: Personal Collection of Roy H. Van Horn, Houston, Texas.
