[SLAVERY & ABOLITION] -- [TURNER, Nat (1800-1831)].

Lot 0012 Details

Description
[SLAVERY & ABOLITION] -- [TURNER, Nat (1800-1831)]. Daily Evening Portland Advertiser. Vol. I, No. 205. Portland, ME: J. & W.E. Edwards, 30 August 1831.

4pp., folio, 11 1/4 x 17 1/8 in. (Fully separated along centerfold, some soiling to folds, some scattered spotting throughout, some toning in margins, few chips to edges).

Contains inside page headlines, “Insurrection in Virginia...insurrection of the blacks," accompanied by long, detailed full column report of Nat Turner's rebellion of enslaved African Americans, which took place in Southampton County, Virginia, in August 1831.

The rebels killed between 55 and 65 people, at least 51 of whom were white. The rebellion was put down within a few days, but Turner survived in hiding for more than two months afterward. The rebellion was effectively suppressed at Belmont Plantation on the morning of 23 August 1831. There was widespread fear in the aftermath, and militias organized in retaliation to the rebels. The state executed 56 enslaved African Americans accused of being part of the rebellion, and many non-participants were punished in the frenzy. Approximately 120 enslaved African Americans and free African Americans were murdered by militias and mobs in the area. State legislatures passed new laws prohibiting the education of enslaved and free African Americans, restricting rights of assembly and other civil liberties for free African Americans, and requiring white ministers to be present at all worship services.
