Description
[SLAVERY & ABOLITION]. Bill of sale for enslaved man, "Harry," New Jersey, 27 June 1839.

1pp, 7 1/2 x 12 1/2 in. (creased with partial separation at folds, some spotting). Docketed with incorrect date on verso. Provenance: John Hopper House, Hackensack, NJ (consignor relates document discovered there).

Document records the sale of an enslaved man named Harry for the amount of fifty dollars to Jacob J. Hopper. Signed by seller James A Van Duyne and a witness (indecipherable). Document reads, in part: "Know all men by these presents that I James A Van Dyne [sic] of the township of Manchester in the county of Passaic and state of New Jersey for and in consideration of the sum of fifty Dollars...do bargain sell & deliver unto the said Jacob J. Hopper one certain coulered [sic] boy named Harry aged twenty one years and six months to have and to hold the said coulered boy unto the said Jacob J. Hopper his executors administrators and assigns until the said boy shall arrive to the age of twenty five years..."
