BEVERLY, Mass. – Kaminski Auctions will present an important collection of ocean liner artifacts and ephemera amassed over a 30-year period. This outstanding collection along with other nautical themed additions will be presented at auction on Sunday, Oct. 21, starting at 10 a.m. EDT. LiveAuctioneers.com will provide Internet live bidding.

Full of colorful reminders of the golden days of ocean travel from the 1880s to the present day, these important pieces of ocean history are directly connected to the passenger and immigrant ships that visited the many historic docks along America’s coasts.

Never offered at auction before, this important single-owner collection includes, vintage full-size life rings from such ships as RMS Queen Mary, RMS Mauretania, SS Leonardo Da Vinci, SS France, SS America, Caronia, SS Leviathan, SS President Cleveland, MV Noordam and many others.

The collection also includes historic life jackets from the RMS Queen Mary, SS United States, SS Normandie and the last voyage of the ill-fated Morro Castle, which caught fire off the coast of New Jersey in 1934.

Several hundred individual pieces, many one-of-a-kind and extremely scarce, representing 120 different ships comprise the collectable items in the sale. Ephemera include documents autographed by ship captains, vintage deck plans, period photographs, enameled souvenir spoons and knives, ship pins, pennants, hat ribbons, framed lithographs and numerous examples of on-board stationary.

Famous ocean liners such as the Lusitania, Titanic, her sister ship, Olympic, and the Andrea Doria are well represented in the collection.

All of these items are fully vetted by Gary Robinson, a collector and researcher of maritime memorabilia. “It is rare to find such a variety of important items in one offering. The breadth and depth of the ocean liner collection is virtually unparalleled in the maritime field,” Robinson said.

SOUTHAMPTON, Pa. – On Oct. 19 at 10 a.m., suburban Philadelphia’s Stephenson’s Auctioneers will open the doors to a virtual antique toyshop in their Bucks County gallery. The 400-lot auction offering of toys, dolls and trains is headlined by highly desirable Marklin, Lionel and American Flyer trains and accessories; and 50 lots of premier aviation toys from the GR Webster collection. Dolls of every imaginable variety also grace the lineup.

The toy, train and doll session will feature all forms of bidding, including live via the Internet through LiveAuctioneers.com.

The auction will open with approximately 150 lots of dolls, ranging from antique European bisques to pincushion, Kewpie and postwar plastic dolls. The earliest dolls include an 1894 Armand Marseille and other bisque-head dolls; a German china-head doll and a Gebruder Heubach bisque-head composition “winker” doll. A sizable selection of hard plastic dolls includes examples by Mary Hoyer and several appealing “strung” Vogue Ginny dolls from the 1950s. The list of fresh-to-the-market dolls continues with Madame Alexander Cissette portrait dolls and bent-knee walkers; Molly E cloth country dolls, American Girl and Gotz dolls. Cinema sweetheart Shirley Temple will even make an appearance in the form of boomer-era vinyl productions from Ideal.

Coming from a home in Rydal, Pa., is an all-original “Girl in Victorian Chair” cast-iron mechanical bank. Attributed to J. & E. Stevens, the circa-1880 bank is designed so that the dog on the little girl’s lap pivots to a forward position when a coin is deposited.

Fifty lots of exceptional airplanes and other aviation-related toys from the famed Capt. Geoffrey “GR” Webster collection will follow. A highly decorated Vietnam War aviator, Webster’s interest in 20th-century aircraft evolved into an internationally acclaimed collection of aviation toys and models built over several decades and showcased in two popular reference books he authored.

“Captain Webster always focused on condition and rarity. There are some beautiful pieces in our auction, including boxed gift sets, which collectors love,” said Cindy Stephenson, owner of Stephenson’s Auctioneers.

An excellent Pilen S.A. (Spanish) store display set with 20 colorful metal airplanes, all intact in their proper board positions, is among the top lots to emerge from the Webster “hangar.” Additionally, there are Bachmann mini-planes in original boxes, Dinky Toy cast-iron airplanes including a Giro Plane and Lucky Boy plane; and a 999 DH Comet Airliner in original box with landscape design.

Several coveted Edison productions will be offered, including H.F. “Le Ali Degli Eroi” and H.F. “Cielo Tricolore” boxed gift sets, each with four die-cast aircraft models. There are also nine boxed Russian aircraft models and 14 boxed Polistil (Italian) airplanes made in 1976.

The Webster collection continues with Aero mini planes, a boxed French Roto-Gyre gyroscope, Siku airport accessories, Solido helicopters and a boxed Corgi British Airways Concorde. French-made toys include a Boeing 707 and Caravelle, both boxed. Rounding out the selection are Northrop Transport die-cast aircraft, Aero mini planes and a boxed French Roto-Gyre gyroscope.

Next up will be a menagerie of postwar Steiff and artist teddy bears, and a large selection of Christmas ornaments, including Italian designs of hand-blown glass and figural ornaments depicting small dolls.

Vintage toy trains from a Montgomery County (suburban Philadelphia) residence will be whistling through Stephenson’s gallery. A fine collection of German Marklin HO gauge, Lionel and American Flyer trains, many boxed and in like-new condition, will be auctioned. The Marklins include an HO No. 7028 roundhouse and No. 7186 turntable, track, accessories and transformers with original boxes and 1964 receipt. There are Marklin trains composed of locomotives and cars from multiple sets, such as the set that includes locomotive No. 3066 with boxed cars from 4605, 4607, 4621 and 4618. The second Marklin set includes loco/tender G800 with (mostly boxed) cars from the following sets: RSM800, 348/1, 348/4, 346/2 and 346/3J. Two other consignors added to the host of Marklin treasures with a quantity of track and many very good, boxed Marklin accessories, e.g., station lamps, control plates, switch panels and Z-gauge buildings.

Swedish royal court slams ‘offensive’ artwork

STOCKHOLM (AFP) – Sweden’s royal court has criticized the publication of an artwork showing the Swedish king eating pizza off a naked woman’s body, while the queen tries to scrub a swastika off the floor.

“There is a limit to how much anyone should have to endure. The picture is offensive, hurtful and malicious,” the Marshal of the Court, Svante Lindqvist, said in a statement.

In the picture, King Carl XVI Gustaf is shown overlooking the naked body of pop singer Camilla Henemark, together with a group of people eating pizza off her, some of whom were named in an unofficial tell-all biography that shook the Swedish monarchy two years ago.

The 2010 biography claimed the king had a year-long affair with Henemark and gave details of his alleged partying at dubious clubs, one of which was owned by an ex-convict.

Artist Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin told Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet that the montage “shows how women are treated in these types of boys’ clubs.”

The picture is to appear in a magazine published by the Social Democratic party and is controversial even in a country that cherishes its freedom of speech.

“I’m prepared to take my punishment if it’s illegal,” Daniel Suhonen, editor-in-chief and publisher of Tiden, told news agency TT.

Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin is known for sparking controversy, and has made headlines in recent days in Serbia with her exhibition “Ecce Homo”, featuring photos portraying Jesus among homosexuals, transsexual people and people with AIDS.

The exhibition, organized as part of Belgrade Pride Week, opened Wednesday under heavy police security despite the threats by extremist groups to target the show.

Wright boasts top-tier 20th century designers in Oct. 18 sale

CHICAGO – Wright’s Modern Design auction on Thursday, Oct. 18, features an incomparable selection of works by the best-known designers of the 20th century. Exceptional pieces from modern greats such as Harry Bertoia, Walter Lamb, George Nelson & Associates, Jean Prouvé and Carlo Scarpa figure prominently in the auction, which will begin at noon CDT. LiveAuctioneers.com will provide Internet live bidding.

The auction also has number of pieces by Pierre Jeanneret including a Kangourou lounge chair and two pairs of Senat armchairs, which are expected to be popular among bidders.

Several pieces designed by George Nakashima including important Minguren I and II coffee tables, a set of four Conoid chairs and a Conoid dining table also rank among the highlights of the auction.

Highly anticipated among the lots is a collection of furniture designed by architect Frank Gehry from his Easy Edges (1969-73) and Experimental Edges (1979-82) series. In the tradition of modern masters such as Charles and Ray Eames, Gehry elevates a humble material, cardboard, to build masterworks of design. Gehry is direct and honest in his engagement with the material – unpainted and unvarnished. Gehry takes full advantage of the warmth of the cardboard’s tone and the honeycombed texture to create beautiful, functional forms from an unconventional material. The earlier Easy Edges pieces are distinctively sculptural with sharp, clean profiles. These designs later evolved into the Experimental Edges line, for which Gehry uses multiple layers of cardboard to create pieces of furniture that appear solid and visually dense with soft edges. Designed and manufactured early in his career, these exceptional furniture forms are harbingers of the radical innovation to come from Gehry’s studio.

Other noteworthy decorative objects include a remarkable teapot by Harry Bertoia, a Gorham Silver Co. cocktail shaker of artillery shell and a major circa ’70s coffee service by Donald Colflesh. A selection of Italian glass by Scarpa, Venini, Gambone, Buzzi and Fratelli Toso also join the ranks of remarkable modern decorative objects.

This auction features approximately 250 lots of exceptional modern design.

10-foot bronze sculpture stolen from Topeka church

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Topeka police are looking for a 10-foot-tall bronze statue called “Forgiven Man” after it was stolen from a church.

The statue is a cubist depction of a man with his right forearm extended forward, his palm open and upward as though extending a helping hand.

The statue was stolen early Wednesday from a memorial garden in front of the First Congregational Church. Police say they received a call from a witness who saw two men load the statue into an extended-cab pickup truck.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that police say the bronze statue is worth $10,000. The thieves also did about $400 damage to a concrete bench and sign at the church.

The church’s pastor, Tobias Schlingensiepen, says he believes the statute is worth more than $10,000.

Schlingensiepen is the Democratic nominee for the 2nd Congressional District seat. But he says he’s sure the theft had nothing to do with politics.

Anyone with information may call detectives at 785-368-9400 or Crime Stoppers at 785-234-0007.

Fire-damaged Indiana museum plans to rebuild

HAGERSTOWN, Ind. (AP) – A fundraising campaign is under way to help the Hagerstown Museum and Arts Place repair fire damage.

The museum came close to being a total loss after a fire broke out on June 23 in the neighboring Willie and Red’s restaurant.

“Our structural engineer said we had about five more minutes before the whole thing combusted. It was a near thing,” museum director Tom Butters told The Courier-Times in New Castle.

The museum suffered smoke damage, but the worst was in the attic where wooden rafters were charred. The rafters and shingles on the roof needed replacement.

“That’s a frightfully dreary place up there,” Butters said. “It’s knee-deep in soot.”

To help repair the museum, the Wayne County Foundation is offering a challenge grant. Any donation given to the Hagerstown Museum and Arts Place from Oct. 29 to Nov. 9 will be matched by the Wayne County Foundation. The foundation will match up to a total of $5,000. The largest match from any single donor will be $1,000.

That was all the Hagerstown Town Council needed to hear at its weekly meeting Monday. The council voted unanimously to give $1,000 to the Hagerstown Museum and Arts Place.

“In the violin classes they were giving, there were people coming from Muncie because those are free classes,” Hagerstown Council President Rich Cole said. “I know some people that take the art classes who come up from Richmond.”

The money given to the museum will not impede Hagerstown’s budget. The town had $13,600 in a grant for the beautification of Main Street and the museum is located on Main Street.

Butters has already invested almost $1,000 trying to get new signs.

Although renewed memberships are appreciated, Butters said those renewals won’t count toward the matching grant.

The museum will open again in the spring, Butters said. Remaining tasks include roof repairs and clearing out the smell of smoke.

“The roofing alone is going to take several more weeks,” Butters said. “We’ll have new wiring, we’ll have a new roof and we’ll have new gutters.”

A piece of wood found in the attic included a signature of square nails embedded in it. It is initialed “CML” and dated “1880.”

“That was a worker who left his mark,” Butters said. “It gives you some sense of the perspective of the 132 years of the past since that building was constructed.”

Butters has some plans to attract more children to the museum once it is reopened.

“We are trying to conserve the history of the middle creek valley and expand the presentation of it,” Butters said. “We’ve got to have some new exhibits that will engage the attention of kids.”

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The low water levels on the Mississippi River have revealed the remains of a World War II ship that was ripped from the St. Louis riverfront during floods two decades ago.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the remains of the USS Inaugural are now visible on the Mississippi about a half mile past the MacArthur Bridge in St. Louis. The USS Inaugural was a fleet minesweeper during World War II. It launched in October 1944.

The sweeper was decommissioned in 1946 and turned into a museum ship on the St. Louis riverfront in 1968.

During massive flooding in the area in 1993, the ship was ripped from its mooring and grounded about a mile downstream where it’s now visible.
