Alamo document posts $137,500 at Heritage Auctions’ Texana sale

This document was written by William B. Travis, a lieutenant colonel in the Texas Army, who died at the age of 26 at the Battle of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution. It sold for $137,500. Heritage Auctions image.

 

DALLAS – A historically important document signed by William Barret Travis, securing walnut lumber to help build a garrison just days before the Alamo was attacked by Mexican forces, sold for $137,500 in Heritage Auctions’ Texana & Western Americana auction March 24 in Dallas.

Flemish tapestry, fine jewelry highly anticipated at Capo Auction April 22

NEW YORK – Capo Auction Fine Art and Antiques will present their next spring auction on Saturday, April 22, at 11 a.m. Eastern. Along with an unusual Flemish Verdure tapestry, the auction will spotlight an impressive selection of fine jewelry and various types of antique and modern furniture, along with unusual fine and contemporary art, silver, bronze and decorative items. The impressive hand-knotted Flemish Verdure tapestry dates to the late 17th or early 18th century and depicts a lion and wild boar. The 93-by-103-inch textile is estimated at $8,000-$12,000.

In the jewelry department Capo is featuring a Cartier diamond solitaire ring, 18k yellow gold and 1.50 carats (est. $5,000-$7,000).

A Charles Krypell diamond bracelet and earrings suite, 18K yellow and 4.50 total carat weight, is expected to sell for   $7,000-$9,000.

A wide selection of furniture includes an 18th century black lacquered cabinet on stand with gilt chinoiserie decoration, opening to reveal an asymmetrical arrangement of drawers. Purchased in 1987 from Kentshire Galleries, Ltd., New York City, it is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

Offered in fine and contemporary art at Capo Auction this month are a Whitney Bedford (American, b. 1976) La La Land (Twin Sunset) ink and oil on canvas on panel, 2014. Signed, dated and titled on the verso, the 48-by-72-inch painting (below) is estimated at $7,000-$9,000.

A J.J. Henner (French, 1829-1905) oil on canvas painting titled Woman in Red Hood, 13 by 10 inches is estimated at $1,500-$2,500. A Robert Cumming (American, b. 1943) silver gelatin photographic image titled South Pacific Army Bivouac, (Series Baa-Baa Black Sheep) Stage #6, printed in 1977, 9 by 12 inches, is also expected to sell for $1,500-$2,500.

Decorative and other items will include a Chinese carved rose quartz figure modeled as a seated maiden holding a fan. The 5 1/2-inch-high figure has an $80-$120 estimate.
