Portland Museum of Art to host exhibition of 19th century American artists

PORTLAND, Maine – On August 17, 2018, the Portland Museum of Art (PMA) opens Americans Abroad, 1860-1915, an exhibition of watercolors, prints, and paintings by American artists who travelled to Europe for training and inspiration in the late 19th century. The exhibition of 24 works by artists such as Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler, draws from the PMA collection and special loans, and includes rarely seen watercolors by John Singer Sargent, Maurice Prendergast, and more.

Debt prompts hunt for auctioneers to disperse Lincoln items

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – The hunt for auctioneers to sell off parts of a valuable collection of Lincoln artifacts, including an iconic stovepipe hat and gloves bloodied the night he was assassinated, to settle a $9.7 million debt began Wednesday, but the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum Foundation cautioned a sale isn’t imminent.

CAIRO (AP) – Egyptian authorities are demolishing a historical 19th century neighborhood in Cairo to make way for high-end housing and business development a stone’s throw from the Nile, angering residents who say they have not been properly compensated.
