MONROVIA, Calif. – Moran’s first Studio Furniture & Decorative Art Auction of the year realized strong prices for midcentury-modern furnishings, silver and traditional décor. Unique pieces continue to shine at auction and realize strong prices. Absentee and Internet live bidding was available through LiveAuctioneers.
Collectors of traditional décor had many selections to choose from in this auction. One of the top lots of the sale were two Art Nouveau vases by Rozenberg. The delicate vases brought well over their $500-$800 estimate to sell for $4,687.50 (above). All prices realized include Moran’s 25 percent buyer’s premium
Selections of mid-century-modern furnishings performed well throughout the auction. A beautifully designed pair of teak and cord chairs was one of the most popular lots heading into the auction. After a strong bidding war, the chairs (below) exceeded their $600-$900 estimate to sell for $1,625.
A modern “Swag Leg” desk from Herman Miller is sure to make a bright addition to the buyer’s office, selling for $937.50 (estimate: $600-$900).
Lighting fixtures of all shapes and sizes performed particularly well at the auction. A pair of brass wall sconces designed with ribbons and a Sevres-style panel exceeded its $500-$700 estimate to sell for $2,250. A beautiful French Empire-style light sold above its $600-$900 for $1,062.50 after a protracted bidding war. Pair of Louis XVI-style hanging light fixtures were one of the most popular lots heading into the auction. There was little surprise when the stunning pair sold well above its $800-$1,200 estimate for $2,375. Low-tech lighting also had a moment in the auction.
A pair of Baccarat candlestick lusters in the rare “Amberina” hue was one of the top selling lots of the night, sailing above their $300-$500 estimate to sell for $1,500.
A carved and polychrome figure of Saint Francis inspired strong competition when it hit the block. The stoic figure roared to a price of $1,500 at auction (estimate $300-$500). A beautifully painted French fire screen exceeded its $300-$500 estimate to sell for $875.
Silver also performed well at the auction. A gorgeous set of Danish Modern flatware from Frigast in the Dolphin pattern was a favorite during the preview. The set caused a bidding war when it hit the block, selling well over its $400-$600 estimate for $1,625.
.A set of sterling silver flatware in the Damask Rose pattern by Heirloom Sterling exceeded its $600-$800 estimate when it sold for $1,062.50. A beautifully crafted sterling silver tipping kettle on stand will make a statement on any sideboard. After a bidding war, the kettle sold for $1,500 (estimate: $500-$800). A set of nut dishes in the form of two peacocks from famed maker Gorham was one of the most asked about lots during preview. The pair proudly brought $531 at the auction (estimate: $300-$500).
Contemporary furnishings and décor made quite a splash at the auction. A delightful mosaic cactus made of hundreds of pieces of bric-a-brac brought a smile to everyone during the previews. The colorful sculpture caused a bidding war between phone, Internet, and floor bidders when it hit the block, selling well above its $600-$900 estimate for $5,000.
A comfortable leather sofa from Ralph Lauren appealed to buyers online who scooped it up for $2,812.50 (estimate: $1,000-$1,500). A fun Rosenthal for Versace “Les Jardins de Papillion” porcelain dinner service created a stir at the auction, selling beyond its $800-$1,200 estimate for $2,000.
